Slivsø at Hoptrup outside Haderslev was drained in 1957-59 so that the area could be used as agricultural land. It was recreated in 2004 in a slightly smaller version of 164 hectares, equivalent to 300 football pitches. When the water was allowed back into Slivsø, the first birds settled in quickly, and today the lake is a habitat for around 180 bird species.
One of the best opportunities to see Slivsø is to follow the marked trails. The path along the north bank is approx. 3,5 km long and brings you close to the lake and wildlife. From the old pumping station, which has been converted into a watchtower, there is a view of the whole lake and its bird life.
The path south of the lake is approx. 2,5 km and there is a beautiful panoramic view of the lake and the hilly landscape. By passing Diernæs and Hoptrup you can link the routes. This trip is approx. 9 km.
In the middle of the lake it is allowed to sail with canoes, kayaks and rowing boats without motor. It is also possible to sail downstream along Hoptrup Å to Diernæs Bay.
From the first Sunday after January 15 to November 15, a valid fishing license is allowed to fish in the middle of the lake and approx. 1 km of the northern shore.
