The old market square in Haderslev was the center of market trade and town life for several hundred years, but during the second half of the 1800th century there was gradually so much pressure on the market square when it was market day that it was decided that a brand new marketplace. The choice fell on an area that had until then been a bog, and the graves were inaugurated in 1880.
Initially, only the cattle market was referred to the Graves, but soon houses were built around the newly built square, and the Graves got a central place in the city. In 1923, all the market trade moved from Torvet to Gravene, and since then Gravene has been Haderslev's central trading place.
Today, Gravene is right next to the pedestrian zone, surrounded by shops, eateries and bars. You can take a rest and enjoy an ice cream on the cozy bench environment while looking at the famous buildings, such as Winds Bogtrykkeri and the old Post Office. Remember to notice the fountain, the center of the tombs.
REMEMBER! You can still come to Torvedag på Gravene every Tuesday and Friday morning, where you can buy everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to fish and cheese.
